The Communications and Information network Association of Japan (CIAJ: a general incorporated association) announces the telecommunication equipment production and trade figures for April through September, 2013 as follows.
The Japanese economy underwent gradual recovery in FY2013, sustained by a lift in exports with the weaker yen and domestic demand stimulated by public spending and other economic stimulus measures. The recent uptake in domestic demand is a reflection of the rush to purchase ahead of the rise in consumption tax in April 1, 2014. However, the continuing shift to overseas manufacturing plants and mounting competition from foreign brands will present even greater challenges in the telecommunication equipment market, especially for terminal equipment brands.
The total value of production in the first half of FY2013 was 484.3 billion yen (-21.7% year-over-year growth). The total figure for exports was 183.2 billion yen (+30.2% year-over-year growth) while imports was 1.180 trillion yen (+27.2% year-over-year growth).
1. Production Trends in the First Half of FY2013
The total value of production in the first half of FY2013 was 484.3 billion yen (-21.7% year-over-year growth), reverting to negative growth after the first positive growth in eight years in FY2012.
[Figures by equipment categories]
- Wireline terminal equipment: 38.5 billion yen (+19.9% year-over-year growth) of which:
- Telephone sets: 3.3 billion yen (+ 11.9% year-over-year growth)
- Telephone application equipment: 33.7 billion yen (+15.9% year-over-year growth)
- Facsimile equipment: 1.4 billion yen (no comparison data available)
- Mobile terminal equipment: 187.9 billion yen (-42.4% year-over-year growth) of which:
- Mobile phones: 118.4 billion yen (-59.2% year-over-year growth)
- Public-use PHS terminals: 5.0 billion yen (-25.7% year-over-year growth)
- Fierce competition with foreign brands in the smartphone market and the shift to overseas manufacturing led to the large drop in domestic production figures.
- Wireline network equipment: 159.7 billion yen (-1.1% year-over-year growth) of which:
- Switching systems: 49.9 billion yen (-19.3% year-over-year growth)
- Transmission equipment: 109.8 billion yen (+10.3% year-over-year growth).
- Central office switching systems reverted to a significant drop after a positive growth the previous year.
- Wireless network equipment: 66.1 billion yen (-2.5% year-over-year growth) of which:
- Fixed telecommunication equipment: 21.2 billion yen (+10.6 year-over-year growth)
- Base stations: 44.8 billion yen (-7.6% year-over-year growth)
- The growth in fixed telecommunication equipment reflects the healthy demand for disaster prevention/emergency-related systems. The negative growth in base station production is a backlash from the surge in capacity enhancements by carriers the previous year.
- Network access equipment: 21.3 billion yen(+0.7% year-over-year growth)
- A second consecutive year of positive growth was recorded, helped by the popularity of consumer equipment in relation to the spread of broadband use, and BCP investments by private and public sectors.
- Wireline parts: 10.8 billion yen (+9.2% year-over-year growth)
- The Wireline parts figure, which includes relay transmission equipment, grew with the increase in telecommunication infrastructure investment.
2. Exports
