The Communications and Information network Association of Japan (CIAJ: a general incorporated association) announces the telecommunication equipment production and trade figures for April through June, 2013 as follows.
The total value of telecommunication equipment produced in Japan during this period was 204.1 billion yen, or a negative growth of 23.4% over the same period the previous year. After recording a small rebound following five consecutive years of negative growth in the first quarter of 2012, the number has reverted to a significant drop in 2013.
Although the number of products shipped based on orders received grew in the April – June quarter, mobile phones, which account for approximately 60% of terminal equipment production figures, saw a large drop with the continued shift to overseas manufacturing sites among domestic brands and the penetration of foreign brands in the Japanese market. Despite the continued investment in telecom infrastructure from last year, the change from positive to negative growth in wireless network equipment pushed the domestic production figure for network equipment into negative growth for the first quarter.
The total figure for exports was 80.9 billion yen (positive 16.1% over the same period the previous year), and imports totaled 561.3 billion yen (34.2% positive growth over the same period the previous year).
I. Domestic Production
The total value of production for the first quarter of FY2013 was 204.1 billion yen, or a negative growth of 23.4% over the same period the previous year*. After recording a rebound following five consecutive years of negative growth in the first quarter of last year, the number has reverted to a significant drop in 2013.
*The “telegraph & imaging device” category has been eliminated from January 2013 and this change is reflected in the year-over-year growth rate

[Figures by equipment categories]
- Wireline terminal equipment 18.1 billion yen (positive growth of 15.9% over the same period of the previous year)
- Mobile terminal equipment 69.3 billion yen (negative growth of 45.1% over the same period of the previous year), of which mobile phones accounted for 54.3 billion yen (negative growth of 51.6% over the same period of the previous year), public-use PHS 2.5 billion yen (negative growth of 37.5% over the same period of the previous year)
- Wireline network equipment 71.2 billion yen (negative growth of 9.0% over the same period of the previous year), of which switching systems accounted for 23.9 billion yen (negative growth of 22.6% over the same period of the previous year) and transmission equipment accounted for 47.3 billion yen (negative growth of 0.2% over the same period of the previous year).
- Wireless network equipment 29.5 billion yen (negative growth of 6.5% over the same period of the previous year), of which base station communication devices accounted for 20.5 billion yen (negative growth of 16.2% over the same period of the previous year).
- Network access equipment 11.1 billion yen (positive growth of 11.8% over the same period of the previous year)
- Wireline parts 5.0 billion yen (positive growth of 1.4% over the same period of the previous year)
<<Noteworthy developments in QI of FY2013>>
- Although the market for wireline terminal equipment continues to shrink, the return in capital investment accompanying the economic recovery and replacement demand helped push the year-over-year production figures for key telephones and intercom equipment to positive growth.
- Smartphones are increasingly accounting for a larger share of the mobile terminal equipment market, but the domestic production figure indicated a dramatic drop, as more foreign brands made headway into the market and Japanese brands moved their manufacturing facilities abroad. Public-use PHS showed a significant drop as the shift to PHS-smartphone dual devices continued.
- In wireline network equipment, both switching systems and digital transmission equipment, last year’s growth areas, had minus figures, pushing the entire category downwards.
- Demand for wireless network equipment declined over the previous year, as the growth in fixed communication devices was not able to make up for the drop in base stations, which had shown positive year-over-year figures until last year.
- Wireline parts continued to show positive growth in conjunction with investments in mobile infrastructure, including LTE base stations, to keep up with explosive traffic growth.
